Trauma-Informed Advocacy: Effectively Representing Vulnerable Clients in Immigration Law

Working with vulnerable clients such as survivors of persecution, domestic violence, or human trafficking requires more than legal skill. This trauma‑informed advocacy workshop, offered by the Legal Professionals Education Network (LPEN) and taught by Kamaljit Lehal and Deanna Okun‑Nachoff, gives new lawyers and immigration consultants practical tools for supporting clients safely and effectively.

The course explains how trauma affects memory, communication, and credibility assessments, helping practitioners avoid misinterpretations that can harm a client’s case. Participants learn how to build trust while maintaining boundaries and how to prepare clients for testimony in ways that reduce the risk of retraumatization.

The training also highlights the importance of educating decision‑makers about trauma and connecting clients with community supports that strengthen both well‑being and legal outcomes. Attendees receive access to the live webinar, course materials, on‑demand viewing until December 31, 2026, and a Certificate of Completion.
